The Problem

Although they functioned well upon installation, The Boeing 737 Pressure Relief Doors (PRDs) had proven a problem part to install. Because of the part’s subtle yet complex shape, the PRD often didn’t fit properly and typically required a lot of finish work prior to successful installation.

The Solution
Hartwell engineers evaluated the basic production process and improved the assembly of the Pressure Relief Door by machining the door instead of casting it. The increased accuracy and improved surface finish achieved by machining dramatically improved the accuracy of the part, reducing or eliminating virtually all problems traditionally encountered during installation.

The Benefits
In addition to improving the overall dimensional accuracy, replacing door castings with a machined door part
improved the structural strength of the door and improved the ultimate surface finish. The resulting door cost less
to manufacture, less to install, and resulted in improved surface finish.
